Being LGBTI aware

Is your organisation Rainbow friendly? Know the 6 National Standards for LGBTI Inclusive Practice. Learn more.

A recent online course “Caring for LGBTI People with Dementia” run by Dementia Australia, is a great resource for all aged care support workers.

There are 4 modules and it takes about 6 hours to complete. It is a great addition to the Work with Diverse people unit in the Individual Support certificate.

The section called “Is your organisation LGBTI inclusive” lists the 6 National Standards for LGBTI Inclusive Practice developed by Gay and Lesbian Health Victoria. It mentions the Rainbow tick programme run by QIP, the accreditation provider. Read more http://www.qip.com.au/standards/rainbow-tick-standards/

According to the QIP website “The Rainbow Tick supports organisations to understand and implement LGBTI inclusive service delivery and reassures LGBTI consumers and staff that Rainbow Tick organisations will be aware of, and responsive to their needs”.

Residential Aged Care and LGBTI needs – a snapshot (SN)

SN 1. As of May 2017, there are only 13 aged care facilities in Australia registered on the Rainbow tick programme. A search, on one Australian state, in www.myagedcare, under special needs - LGBTI, found zero residential homes offering this service.

SN2. An example of a real-life situation that may have breached standard 5 regarding confidentiality follows:

An ACF resident disclosed to a support worker that they were gay. The support worker then told the RN in charge who said she would put it in the care plan. The support worker did as she was taught in a workshop run by the ACF. However, according to the National standards, she and the ACF may have breached the confidentiality of the resident. She should have asked the person if they were going to share the information with anyone else and did they want it recorded officially. Now this information has been shared without the person’s consent.

The course runs until 12th April. Registration details https://www.dementiatrainingaustralia.com.au/online-dementia-courses/
