Just on the other side of the river to Brisbane CBD is Southbank. Southbank is a cultural hub and home of the Brisbane Museum, the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC), the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA), and the Queensland Gallery of Art (QAG). Over the month of September, Southbank is also the home of the Brisbane Festival, a month-long festival celebrating and showcasing local art, dance, stage performances, comedy and more. The festival is opened by fantastic fireworks and aerial spectacle over the Brisbane River called River Fire.

Right next to the CBD is a suburb called Fortitude Valley. The Valley, as it is called by locals, is a hub of nightlife with countless bars, restaurants and nightclubs. There are also several venues (The Fortitude Valley Music Hall, The Tivoli, The Zoo, The Triffid, etc) that regularly host national and international musicians, stage performers and comedians.

You will also find green spaces, gardens and parks all over Brisbane. If you need to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life, just a short walk away, you can find yourself at Roma Street Parklands. The parklands are a great place to have a nice walk or to have a barbeque, or even watch an outdoor movie. Over the holiday period, Roma St Parklands is transformed into a fantastic walkthrough light spectacle.

Gold Coast Location

The Gold Coast is the place to be if you love the beach, swimming, and surfing. There are 21 stunning beaches on the Gold Coast to explore. The Gold Coast stretches over 52 kilometres of open coastline . Due to this, the Gold Coast is split up with northern, central and southern suburbs, as well as a hinterland that is inland, and not connected to the beach. Southport is located in central Gold Coast.

The Gold Coast is also the ‘theme park capital of Australia’. Most of the theme parks are located in Northern Gold Coast. This is perfect for thrill seekers, and anyone who loves rides and water parks. The theme parks are Dreamworld, WhiteWater World, Warner Bros. Movie World, Sea World, and Wet’N’Wild. For the thrill seekers, you are also able to climb up the outside of Australia’s tallest building, starting from level 77 of the SkyPoint building, from the top you will be able to admire the Gold Coast’s stunning land and seascapes.

At the heart of Central Gold Coast is Surfers Paradise. Surfers, as it is called by the locals, is well known for the perfect swell (waves), which attracts people who like surfing, and is where the suburb got its name. There are many different surf schools, making Surfers Paradise the best place to learn how to surf. Surfers is also well known for its nightlife, with numerous restaurants, specialty bars and nightclubs.

The Gold Coast is also the perfect place to go whale watching. The whale watching season starts in June and goes until early November, so there are plenty of weekends for you to getaway to see these majestic gentle giants breach and play. There are also several boating and speed boating tours available for you to experience.

It is easy to get away from everything and get back to nature at the Gold Coast’s hinterlands, with heritage-listed rainforests, waterfalls, and national parks to explore, hike and enjoy. You can experience these with day trips, or there are plenty of accommodation options to stay a bit longer.
